John Blake has taken up the mantle of Batman but it became evident that he could not handle the the mafia and a new crop of super villains that have risen up. Bruce Wayne & Selina Kyle have been dead for nearly 10 months when the pair return knowing that Gotham is deteriorating. Bruce returns to take Blake under his wing to give him the training he'd sorely missed. With Blake taking on the persona of Nightwing he is joined by the handful of other vigilantes that have tried to control crime in Gotham since the real Batman's disappearance.
